UK Heatwave: Temperatures 8C Above Average Expected

The next UK heatwave is expected to be far from normal, with temperatures soaring up to 8 degrees Celsius hotter than the seasonal average. England and Wales will experience a significant rise in temperatures over the coming days, climbing into the mid to high-20s Celsius, according to the BBC.

Temperature Forecast

After a poor start to June, temperatures are set to reach between 22 and 27 degrees Celsius, potentially hitting 28 degrees Celsius (82.4 degrees Fahrenheit) in southeast England by Sunday. BBC weather presenter Simon King stated: "These temperatures will be around 6 to 8 degrees Celsius above average for early June."

Heatwave Criteria

King added: "This warmer-than-average weather is forecast to last into next week, but to become an official heatwave, temperatures need to be higher than 25-28 degrees Celsius, depending on location, for three consecutive days."

Weekend Outlook

Friday and the weekend will see a warming trend, with temperatures rising above the June average. The BBC Weather outlook notes that Friday will still have some patchy rain, but southern regions may turn drier, with temperatures rising into the 20s Celsius. High pressure building into southern regions will expand across the UK through the weekend.

Saturday should be fine across much of England and Wales after some early fog patches, but the north may experience a little patchy rain, along with Scotland and Northern Ireland. Any rain should be pushed farther north on Sunday, resulting in a warm weekend, especially in central and southern England where temperatures may reach the mid to high 20s Celsius.

Met Office Verdict

The Met Office has also issued its verdict on the improving weather. Its outlook from June 14 to June 23 states: "Fine and dry across much of the UK for the first couple of days of this period with long spells of sunshine for most. Temperatures are likely to be above normal, and parts of the south could be very warm for a time."

It adds: "A more unsettled spell is likely through the middle of next week with outbreaks of rain in the north and northwest, some of which could spread to parts of the south and southeast at times. After this, high pressure will probably become more dominant, with conditions turning widely dry and settled, and probably very warm for many."
