Young environmental champions from St Michael's Church of England Academy have taken direct action against coastal plastic pollution with a dedicated beach cleaning initiative. Pupils in Years 3 and 4 recently visited the popular Goodrington Sands in Paignton, Devon, to collect litter and debris as a key part of their school's 'courageous advocacy week'.
Protecting Local Marine Life
The primary school children were motivated by a strong desire to prevent plastic waste from entering the ocean and causing harm to the area's precious marine wildlife. Speaking about their efforts, the passionate pupils expressed a firm determination to become a positive force for environmental change in their community and the wider world.
Community Support for the Clean-Up
The successful operation was bolstered by support from local businesses and community figures. Swisco, a Devon-based recycling firm, generously provided all the necessary sacks and litter picking equipment for the event. Reverend Laura McCadam, the parish priest, also joined the young volunteers on the shoreline, helping to tidy the beach and offering encouragement.
After completing their hard work combing the sands for rubbish, the class were treated to well-earned refreshments. The team at the Cantina Café kindly gifted the children drinks and chips, providing a celebratory end to their productive day.

Julie Edwards, Head of Academy at St Michael's, reflected on the profound impact of the activity. "It was truly inspiring to see the children so committed to protecting our local beaches and wildlife," she said. "These practical sessions allow our pupils to witness the real, tangible impact of their environmental actions, which is incredibly powerful for their development."
The school intentionally uses these special themed weeks to help children cultivate a robust sense of community responsibility and civic duty. Tracey Cleverly, CEO of the Learning Academy Partnership, which includes St Michael's, praised the initiative's broader educational value.
