Energy Giants Call for Increased Household Power Usage This Summer
Major UK energy suppliers, including British Gas, EDF, EON, Ovo, and Octopus, are set to urge households to boost their electricity consumption this summer. This initiative aims to capitalize on the nation's record levels of renewable energy generation, helping to balance the power grid and potentially lower energy bills for consumers.
New Scheme to Manage Renewable Surplus
The National Energy System Operator (Neso) is preparing to launch a new scheme as early as this summer to address the surge in renewable power. This program builds upon the existing Demand Flexibility Service, which previously incentivized households to reduce energy use during shortages. Now, the focus shifts to encouraging increased usage during periods of excess supply from wind and solar sources.
Customers with smart meters will be prioritized in this scheme. Energy suppliers are expected to offer various perks, such as bill credits, cash payments, or heavily discounted—and even free—electricity. This approach rewards flexible electricity consumption, which strengthens the resilience and efficiency of Great Britain's electricity network, according to Deborah Petterson, Neso's director of resilience and emergency management.
How the Initiative Works
The scheme allows consumers and businesses to earn rewards by increasing their electricity usage through their energy suppliers or third-party applications. For example, households are encouraged to run appliances like washing machines and dishwashers or charge electric vehicles when there is an abundance of renewable energy on the grid.
This strategy helps balance the system and reinforces energy security by utilizing smaller, flexible technologies such as wind farms, solar panels, and batteries. Neso emphasizes that these methods can maintain system security at the same or lower cost compared to traditional large power stations.
