Energy Advice Group Recommends 19°C Setting for Living Rooms
As cold weather persists across the UK, households are being urged to set their living room thermostats to a consistent temperature of around 19°C. This recommendation comes from Uswitch, a leading energy advice group, which highlights significant financial and environmental benefits from this simple adjustment.
Substantial Savings on Annual Energy Bills
Uswitch emphasizes that reducing your thermostat by just one degree Celsius can save approximately £90 per year based on December 2025 energy prices. For those currently heating their homes to 20°C or 21°C, lowering the temperature by 2°C could result in savings of up to £160 annually. The group advises that this reduction does not pose health risks, suggesting wearing an extra layer of clothing while acclimating to the new setting.
Environmental impact is also notable, with each degree reduction saving around 320kg of CO2 emissions, contributing to broader climate action efforts.
Addressing Heat Loss in Colder Homes
For households experiencing colder indoor temperatures, Uswitch points to potential heat loss as a key factor. The advice group recommends investing in improved insulation for walls or lofts to enhance energy efficiency. "If your home is on the warmer side, you shouldn't need to have your heating on as much or as high, so you should save money on your bills," Uswitch explains. "If it's colder, it may cost you more money if you turn your heating on or keep it at a high level."
Living Room Focus and Health Considerations
Living rooms are specifically targeted in this advice due to the extended time people spend there relaxing, making a comfortable temperature preferable. Additionally, the British Heart Foundation warns about indoor air pollution, noting that poor air flow in homes can exacerbate health risks, particularly for individuals with heart or circulatory conditions. Sources of such pollution include:
- Burning wood or other materials indoors
- Lack of ventilation leading to accumulated fumes
- External factors like vehicle emissions affecting indoor air quality
Uswitch's guidance aims to help consumers manage energy costs effectively while promoting healthier living environments. With energy prices remaining a concern for many, these practical steps offer a straightforward way to achieve both economic and ecological benefits.
