On March 2, the Mexican-inspired fast-casual chain, which specializes in burritos, quesadillas, and nachos, was assessed by food safety inspectors and given a rating of '2', indicating that improvement is necessary. According to local authority standards, any score below '3', which is considered generally satisfactory, is classified as a fail.

The inspection evaluated critical areas such as food safety protocols, overall cleanliness, and proper storage practices, as outlined by the Food Standards Agency. As of April 8, this Tortilla outlet is the sole restaurant within Grand Central shopping centre to hold a failed hygiene rating.

Chain's Response and Commitment to Improvement

A spokesperson for Tortilla expressed deep disappointment over the outcome, emphasizing that the company has consistently maintained five-star ratings across its more than 50 locations nationwide. The Birmingham branch, which has been operating at Grand Central for nearly 11 years as one of the original restaurants in the centre, is now the only one to fall short in hygiene inspections.

In contrast, the other Tortilla location in Birmingham, situated on New Street, holds a food hygiene rating of '4', last inspected in October 2024.
