A Lancashire animal sanctuary has started 2026 with a critical rescue mission, saving a pregnant cat named Lily from a dire hoarding situation. Woodlands Animal Sanctuary in Holmeswood, near Ormskirk, took in Lily and more than 50 other cats and dogs, marking its first major rescue of the new year.
A Sanctuary Steps In for Lily and Her Companions
Lily, the expectant mother, is just weeks away from giving birth to her kittens. She was living in terrible conditions before the sanctuary's intervention. The team is also currently hand-rearing a litter of orphaned kittens, highlighting the constant demand for their services.
Lynn, the animal care manager at Woodlands, explained the urgency. "These cats desperately needed our help," she said. "The pregnant mum and her companions were living in terrible conditions. Thanks to our dedicated team and supporters, they're now receiving the care they need to be able to rehome them when the time is right."
Community Events and Volunteer Drive for 2026
As the sanctuary braces for another busy year, it is actively engaging the local community. A recent volunteer open day was a success, bringing in numerous new recruits who are now being onboarded for roles in animal care and fundraising.
The charity has also launched its 2026 event calendar to raise essential funds:
- Tea & Tours Experience: Running every Saturday in January, this offers guided sanctuary tours with refreshments.
- Quiz Night: Scheduled for Saturday, 7th March at Tarleton Bowling Club, promising a fun evening of trivia.
Ongoing Financial Pressures and How to Help
With operating costs remaining high, Woodlands Animal Sanctuary faces significant financial pressure. Its winter appeals are still active, providing several direct ways for the public to contribute to animal welfare in Lancashire:
- Gift a meal to a cat in care.
- Buy a bale of hay for stable animals.
- Sponsor an animal and receive updates throughout the year.
Lynn emphasised that every action counts. "Even simple actions like sharing our social media posts help us reach more potential adopters and supporters," she added. "Every bit of support makes a difference to the animals in our care."
