UK Braces for -4C Snow Blast: 600-Mile Front to Hit This Weekend
UK Snow Warning: -4C Blast and 12-Inch Falls Forecast

The United Kingdom is on high alert as a formidable 600-mile snow front, carrying bitterly cold air, is forecast to sweep across the nation in the coming days. The Met Office has issued a series of yellow warnings for snow and ice, with significant disruptions expected from the north of Scotland down to parts of southern England.

Weekend Freeze and Widespread Snowfall

The severe weather is set to intensify over the New Year's weekend. Blizzard-like conditions are expected to hit northern Scotland on New Year's Day, with the cold snap gripping the entire country. Daytime temperatures on Saturday, January 3, and Sunday, January 4, will struggle to rise above 1°C for many, with overnight lows plunging to a harsh -4°C in parts of England.

The initial Met Office warning for snow and ice, currently active for northern Scotland, will be extended significantly. From midnight on Friday, the alert will cover the Midlands and parts of southern England. Forecasters predict that northern Scotland could see accumulations of up to 12 inches (30cm) over the weekend, with parts of Wales also expecting a covering of snow.

Extended Forecast: Snow Blanket Next Week

The wintry conditions are not a brief event. Current projections indicate that more organised and widespread snow will affect central and southern England from Tuesday, January 6 onwards. The most significant period for a widespread blanket of snow across much of the country is forecast for the weekend of January 10-12.

Specifically, from around 6pm on Friday, January 9, through to Sunday, January 12, substantial snowfall is anticipated. The Met Office's detailed forecast warns of 'severe overnight frosts' and a 'risk of more organised sleet and snow at times' as a brisk northerly wind drives showers across many areas.

Met Office Guidance and Public Advice

For tonight (Thursday), the forecast indicates clear skies and an early frost for many. However, snow showers will persist in the north, with sleet and snow spreading south across Northern Ireland into parts of England and Wales later.

The outlook for Friday and the weekend is equally challenging. Patchy rain, sleet, and snow will move south across England and Wales on Friday morning. Snow showers in the north will become more widespread, particularly in areas exposed to the northerly wind. The public is advised to prepare for:

  • Hazardous travel conditions on roads and pavements.
  • Potential disruptions to public transport services.
  • The risk of power outages in the worst-affected regions.
  • Extremely cold conditions requiring extra care for vulnerable individuals.

Residents across the UK are urged to stay updated with the latest Met Office warnings and to plan their journeys carefully as this prolonged period of severe winter weather takes hold.
