Strictly Come Dancing Star Amy Dowden Shares Powerful Cancer Journey Photos
Professional dancer Amy Dowden, best known for her appearances on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, has courageously shared side-by-side photographs documenting her challenging journey through breast cancer treatment. The 35-year-old star revealed the dramatic physical changes her body underwent during what she described as 'intense' chemotherapy sessions.
Diagnosis and Treatment Journey
Amy Dowden received her breast cancer diagnosis in May 2023 at just 32 years of age. The dancer discovered a concerning lump in her breast shortly before embarking on her honeymoon, which led to immediate medical investigation. Her treatment involved a mastectomy followed by rigorous chemotherapy sessions at Birmingham's Heartlands Hospital, where she underwent fortnightly treatments that she described as particularly demanding.
In early 2024, Dowden received the welcome news that there was "no evidence of disease" in her body, marking a significant milestone in her recovery journey. The dancer has now chosen to reflect on her experience by sharing contrasting photographs that highlight both the difficult treatment period and her current improved health.
Powerful Visual Contrast
The first photograph shows Dowden during her chemotherapy treatment, standing in a hospital setting while connected to a chemotherapy drip. Her hair appears shaved following the hair loss commonly associated with cancer treatment. This image starkly contrasts with a second photograph showing the dancer looking healthy, vibrant, and confident in her current state.
Dowden accompanied the images with an emotional caption: "This was me during intense, tough fortnightly chemo, and this is #thisismenow feeling happier, stronger, and more confident than ever. I'm so proud of how far I've come."
Advocacy and Awareness
The Strictly star used her platform to raise awareness about breast cancer realities, noting that almost one million people in the United Kingdom are currently living with or beyond breast cancer. She encouraged others to share their own stories using the hashtag #ThisIsMeNow to help demonstrate the true reality of breast cancer experiences.
Dowden specifically highlighted her support for the charity Breast Cancer Now, stating: "@breastcancernow won't stop until there's a future where everyone with breast cancer lives and lives well. Join me in supporting them until it's Breast Cancer Never."
Overwhelming Support and Ongoing Concerns
The dancer's followers responded with overwhelming support and encouragement in the comments section of her post. One supporter wrote: "So proud of you Amy. You are truly amazing," while another shared their own cancer recovery experience, noting similarities in their journeys.
Despite her recovery, Dowden recently revealed on ITV's Lorraine show that she continues to experience daily worries about cancer recurrence. She explained: "I think the shocking thing for me with a cancer diagnosis was I thought that once I'd rang that bell, it was going to be all done and dusted. But it really, really isn't."
The dancer disclosed that two years after completing her active chemotherapy treatment, a subsequent mammogram detected concerning cells in her other breast. Although these were identified as pre-cancerous cells, the experience has left her with persistent concerns about her health.
Amy Dowden's courageous decision to share her cancer journey publicly serves as both a personal milestone and an important contribution to breast cancer awareness, offering hope and solidarity to others facing similar health challenges.
