Music icon Barry Manilow has shared a significant health update with his fans, revealing he has been diagnosed with lung cancer and will undergo surgery. The 82-year-old singer made the announcement on social media, explaining the discovery came after a prolonged bout of illness.
From Bronchitis to a Cancer Diagnosis
The performer detailed that he recently suffered through six weeks of bronchitis, which was followed by a relapse lasting another five weeks. Although he had recovered enough to return to his stage residency at the Westgate in Las Vegas, his doctor ordered an MRI as a precautionary measure.
That scan revealed the presence of a cancerous spot on his left lung. In his statement, Manilow emphasised the early detection, calling it "pure luck (and a great doctor)". He stated this early discovery was the "good news" in his situation.
The Treatment Plan and Concert Postponements
The "bad news," as Manilow outlined it, is that he must now have surgery to remove the spot. He provided some reassurance to concerned followers, noting that doctors do not believe the cancer has spread, a diagnosis being confirmed with further tests.
His treatment plan, fortunately, does not currently involve chemotherapy or radiation. Instead, the singer joked his recovery would involve "just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns." However, the necessary month-long recovery period means he must reschedule his planned January arena concerts.
A Heartfelt Apology to Fans
Manilow expressed clear disappointment at having to alter plans, directly addressing his audience. "Just like you, we were all looking forward to the January shows and hate having to move everything around," he wrote, apologising to fans who may have to change their own arrangements.
The announcement prompted an immediate and loving response from his global fanbase. His Instagram comments were flooded with messages of support, prayers, and wishes for a swift and complete recovery, underscoring the enduring affection held for the legendary performer.
