The broadcasting community and listeners across Essex are in mourning following the death of Dave Monk, the much-loved BBC Radio Essex presenter. He was 72 years old.
A four-decade broadcasting career
Dave Monk's voice became a fixture in Essex homes over an illustrious career spanning almost 40 years with the BBC. He was one of the original hosts when the local radio show launched back in 1986. His warm, professional delivery guided listeners through major national events, including the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
His final on-air sign-off, now poignantly remembered by fans, urged everyone to: "Look after yourself, have a lot of fun, and don’t forget, the more you laugh, the more you live. Goodbye."
A courageous and public cancer battle
Dave Monk was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2024, a revelation he said came "completely out of the blue" as he initially believed he had gallbladder issues. He underwent an intensive treatment regimen, including 12 rounds of chemotherapy and a major surgery called a pancreaticoduodenectomy.
This operation involved removing parts of his pancreas, bile duct, and stomach. He revealed just one month ago that, although the treatment worked for about four months, subsequent radiotherapy was unsuccessful. The cancer had spread to his lungs and liver.
Facing the prognosis with remarkable courage, he told the BBC he was "not scared of death," but would "rather it not to have come quite yet." He spent his final stages under the care of Farleigh Hospice.
An outpouring of love and tribute
News of his passing has prompted a flood of heartfelt tributes from colleagues, listeners, and public figures he worked with. Fans took to social media to share their grief and memories.
One listener wrote on X: "I just want to remember our much loved BBC ESSEX Presenter Dave Monk... Our feelings go to his wife & family." Another praised his professionalism, noting: "He presented the funeral programme for Sir David Amess with such dignity and expertise. I will miss him a great deal."
A third tribute captured the widespread sentiment, calling him a "tremendous broadcaster and a wonderful and kind man" and adding, "We’ve lost a legend. RIP Dave Monk."
Dave Monk's legacy is one of consistent excellence, deep connection with his Essex audience, and immense bravery in his final year. He will be profoundly missed.
