Beverley Callard's Emotional I'm A Celebrity Exit Revealed as Cancer Battle Beginning
Coronation Street actress Beverley Callard has bravely disclosed that her sudden departure from I'm A Celebrity South Africa was actually the initial sign of her breast cancer diagnosis. The 69-year-old star, who became the first campmate to leave the show, has now shared the full story behind her tearful exit.
Forced Medical Exit from the Jungle
During the Tuesday night episode aired on 21st April, Beverley Callard was seen leaving the camp in emotional distress after consulting with the onsite medical team. Unlike fellow contestant Jimmy Bullard who voluntarily called out "I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here," Beverley's departure was medically mandated.
"I didn't feel very well this morning, I had a bit of a funny turn. And they've said I can't come back in and I've got to go home," Beverley explained through tears at the time. What she didn't know then was that these symptoms were actually caused by undiagnosed breast cancer.
The Off-Camera Medical Emergency
In a recent social media post reflecting on her exit, Beverley revealed additional details about what happened behind the scenes. "It made me cry all over again," she began. "Because of course I didn't know then that I had cancer, but I just knew that it was the sort of last couple of days there that I'd not felt very well."
The actress explained that she was called into the Bush Telegraph area where she temporarily lost consciousness. Medical staff then transported her to a treatment hut where they provided care before making the difficult decision to remove her from the competition.
"They really looked after me, and then they said, 'You can't go back'. And I said, 'Don't send me home. I'm sure I'll be fine'," Beverley recalled. "You know, I jumped out of a plane, hung off a cliff and I did want to succeed and make it through to the end. But that was the start of everything, really, so it's made me really emotional."
Diagnosis and Treatment Journey
Four months after filming I'm A Celebrity South Africa, in February 2026, Beverley publicly announced her early stage breast cancer diagnosis. She subsequently underwent surgery to remove cancerous tissue from her left breast and lymph nodes under her left armpit as a precautionary measure against potential spreading.
Recently, the actress shared that while the primary surgery was successful, medical tests detected a small amount of cancer in one of her lymph nodes. This lymph node has been sent for further testing to determine the aggressiveness of the cancer, with results expected within two weeks.
"If it's aggressive, I will have to undergo chemo first and after that radiotherapy. If it's not aggressive, I will have the radiotherapy as was planned," Beverley explained about her potential treatment pathways.
A Determined Fight Against Cancer
Despite the emotional journey and health challenges, Beverley Callard remains resolutely optimistic about her prognosis. The soap star has made a powerful declaration about her determination to overcome the disease.
"But I will beat this. I will beat it," she affirmed with characteristic bravery. Her story highlights how what initially appeared as a disappointing exit from a reality television competition actually marked the beginning of a much more significant personal health battle.
The actress's openness about her cancer journey has resonated with fans and followers, demonstrating remarkable courage in sharing such a personal health struggle while maintaining hope and determination for recovery.
