Cancer Patient Raises Wedding Funds After GP Dismissal Leads to Late Diagnosis
A 24-year-old woman battling stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma has extended her fundraiser target to help marry her partner, following a delayed diagnosis after months of being told nothing was wrong by her GP. Kelly Underwood, who was initially dismissed by medical professionals, has now launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover costs for her dream wedding and relocation for life-saving treatment in Manchester.
Journey from Dismissal to Diagnosis
Kelly Underwood shared on her fundraiser page that she endured months of being told nothing was seriously wrong before finally receiving a diagnosis of stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma. "By the time I was finally taken seriously, my life had completely changed," she stated, highlighting the emotional and physical toll of the delayed medical response. After her diagnosis, she underwent escalated BEACOPDac chemotherapy, which unfortunately proved unsuccessful, prompting her move to Manchester for specialized radiation therapy that could save her life.
Fundraiser Goals and Progress
The initial fundraiser target was set at £1,300, which has already been met thanks to generous donations. Kelly has now increased the goal to £2,200, with over £1,400 pledged as of Monday evening, April 6, 2026. The funds are intended to support both her relocation for critical treatment and the costs associated with a small, meaningful wedding ceremony. Kelly emphasized the financial strain of cancer, noting her inability to work and the additional expenses of moving for therapy.
Personal Impact and Wedding Dreams
Upon her diagnosis, Kelly became engaged to her partner, Olivia Read, as they faced uncertain timelines due to her health condition. "Cancer has taken so much from me already. My health. My independence. My hair. My fertility. The chance to feel like a 'normal' young woman," Kelly expressed. She added that a wedding represents a source of joy and hope amidst the challenges, stating, "Now, more than anything, I just want the chance to marry the love of my life." The fundraiser aims to turn this dream into a reality, providing a positive focus during her treatment journey.
Community Support and Future Hopes
The community has rallied behind Kelly's cause, with donations pouring in to help her achieve both medical and personal goals. Her story underscores the broader issues of early cancer detection and the financial burdens faced by patients. As she prepares for her move to Manchester, Kelly remains hopeful that the radiation therapy will be successful, and the wedding will serve as a celebratory milestone in her fight against cancer.
