A major UK high street charity shop has closed another location permanently, with over 200 more stores facing potential closure. The Cancer Research UK store in Swindon shut its doors on April 25 after weeks of discount sales, leaving shoppers to discover “now closed” signs on the windows.
Closure Details
The Swindon store, a beloved fixture for bargain hunters and donors, has officially closed. Signs in the window direct customers to scan a barcode to find the nearest remaining store, thanking them for their support. This closure is part of a broader restructuring plan announced by the charity before Christmas.
Restructuring Plan
Cancer Research UK plans to reduce its core chain of high street shops to around 320 locations. This involves closing 90 stores by May 2026, followed by up to 100 more by April 2027. The charity will select which shops to close based on financial contribution, lease terms, and geographical spread. Additionally, its online marketplace will close in early 2026, ending sales of donated items on reselling platforms.
Shift to Superstores
In contrast, the charity is expanding its out-of-town superstores. It already operates 46 larger stores and plans to open 12 more by 2028, aiming to meet growing demand for spacious, value-focused shopping experiences. Cancer Research UK expects a £12.4 million increase in retail financial contribution over the next five years due to these changes.
Reasons for Change
The charity cited rising costs, inflationary pressures, and shifting consumer habits as key factors. Chief executive Michelle Mitchell stated, “Without action, we predict many of our shops will become unprofitable. A smaller, high-performing retail operation will mean we’ll fund more life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff and volunteers.” She acknowledged the difficulty of the news and committed to supporting affected employees and volunteers throughout the process.
