Hospice Launches £20,000 Fundraising Appeal for Special Cuddle Beds
St Margaret's Hospice Care has initiated a heartfelt new appeal aimed at helping more families spend invaluable time together during life's most challenging moments. The hospice is striving to raise £20,000 to finance two additional "cuddle beds" for its In-Patient Unit, providing more patients and their loved ones with the opportunity to lie side by side, hold hands, and experience closeness when it matters most.
What Are Cuddle Beds and Why Are They Important?
A cuddle bed is a specialized hospice bed that safely extends to allow loved ones to lie together comfortably. For couples, parents, and families facing end-of-life situations, it offers something simple yet profoundly meaningful: the chance to stay close, just as they would at home. Currently, St Margaret's has two cuddle beds available for patients in its In-Patient Unit, where individuals with complex needs receive expert palliative care and symptom management. However, with high demand, not every family gets to use one.
By doubling the number of cuddle beds, the hospice aims to enable more people to create lasting memories and share precious time together. This initiative is driven by the belief that physical closeness can provide immense comfort during difficult times.
A Personal Story of Comfort and Connection
For Alison, whose husband Rob was cared for by St Margaret's, the cuddle bed made an immeasurable difference during the final stage of his life. Rob had been living with an aggressive brain tumor, and after months of hospital appointments and treatments, the couple were accustomed to spending time together across bed rails or squeezed into small hospital spaces. At St Margaret's, that changed dramatically.
The hospice offered Alison the chance to lie beside Rob in a cuddle bed. "In a normal hospital, you're just sort of on the periphery," Alison recalls. "There's not a lot of room, or you're told you shouldn't really sit on the bed. But in the hospice, it's all different." For Alison and Rob, the cuddle bed meant they could share the small, everyday moments that had become so precious.
"The evenings where you'd be sat on the sofa at home cuddling and watching TV were carried on in the hospice," Alison says. In the final hours of Rob's life, the cuddle bed allowed Alison to stay beside him, holding his hand. "I lay on the bed with him, just talking to him," she shares. "Then he just went. The nurses were so respectful. They told me to stay with him as long as I wanted. I lay with him for a couple of hours—and when I left, I knew I'd never see him again."
Now, Alison is determined to help other families experience the same comfort and closeness. "A cuddle bed is the most wonderful thing," she emphasizes. "It's so important for families and patients to be together and still have that connection—the same connection they would have had at home."
Fundraising Progress and How to Support
Supporters, including Alison, have already contributed £10,000 towards the appeal. St Margaret's now hopes to raise an additional £20,000 to fund two new cuddle beds for its In-Patient Unit, helping more families share the simple comfort of being close together when it matters most. This effort underscores the hospice's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for patients and their loved ones during palliative care.
The appeal highlights the critical role of community support in providing compassionate end-of-life services. By increasing access to cuddle beds, St Margaret's aims to ensure that no family misses out on the opportunity for meaningful connection during their most vulnerable moments.
