Southport Macmillan Centre Extends Festive Support and Reviews Year of Cancer Care
Macmillan Centre's Festive Opening and Annual Review

The team at Southport Macmillan Centre has shared a festive message of thanks and support for the local community as 2025 draws to a close. The centre has also provided details of its availability over the Christmas period and launched its annual patient experience survey.

Holiday Opening and Support Availability

Recognising that Christmas can be a challenging time and that medical appointments continue, the centre will remain open for drop-in visits and phone calls throughout the holidays. The service will be closed only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. They encourage anyone needing to talk or seeking specific support to get in touch.

A Year of Vital Support and Community Partnership

Over the past 12 months, the centre has provided crucial support to more than 80% of people receiving a cancer diagnosis in the Southport and Formby area. This support has been comprehensive, covering a wide range of needs:

  • Benefits advice and help with claims.
  • Emotional and psychological support to process a diagnosis.
  • Liaison with medical professionals and help understanding treatment.
  • Support for carers, counselling, and prosthetic services.

The team has worked closely with colleagues in GP surgeries, hospital specialist nurses, and Queenscourt Hospice to ensure seamless care. They describe sharing both laughter and tears with service users as they navigate the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.

Growing Exercise Programme and Annual Feedback

A particular highlight of the year has been the expansion of the centre's exercise opportunities, proven to aid recovery and prevent recurrence. The programme now includes:

  • Tai-chi, swimming, and aqua-aerobics.
  • Chair-based exercise, walking, and circuit training.

This is supported by one-to-one advice for exercising before, during, and after treatment, all within a supportive community setting.

As part of their annual review, the centre is now conducting its patient experience survey. They are asking anyone who has used their services in the last year to provide feedback to help shape future support.

The team concluded by expressing gratitude to their local NHS funders for their continued, invaluable support, and wished all their supporters a very Happy Christmas.
