Mum Paralysed in Freak Fall Inspires Son's London Marathon Fundraiser
Sandra Adams, a 67-year-old mother of four from Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, suffered a life-altering spinal cord injury after a tragic accident at her home ten months ago. The former pub manager and care home cook fell down the stairs following a family barbecue in May, an incident that left her fighting for her life in intensive care for months.
Devastating Injuries and Medical Battles
The fall caused catastrophic damage, leaving Sandra paralysed from the neck down. During her extended stay in intensive care, she endured two cardiac arrests, battled pneumonia, and fought through multiple serious lung infections. Medical professionals initially feared she would never come off a ventilator, but Sandra's remarkable determination proved them wrong.
After months of critical care, Sandra was transferred to the Sheffield Spinal Injuries Unit for specialised treatment. While she remains paralysed from the neck down, she has made some progress, regaining movement in her toes and left arm. Her current hope is to restore enough hand function to feed herself and brush her hair independently.
Son's Inspirational Response
Luke Adams, Sandra's 38-year-old son from Tamworth and a supervising officer at HMP Young Offenders Institute Swinfen Hall in Lichfield, has been profoundly inspired by his mother's courage throughout her ordeal. "Overnight, life changed completely," Luke explained. "Her determination, courage, and fighting spirit carried her through every setback. She is my biggest inspiration."
To honour his mother and support others facing similar challenges, Luke has committed to running the London Marathon next month. He will be raising funds for Spinal Research, the United Kingdom's leading charity funding research into function-restoring treatments for people paralysed by spinal cord injuries.
Community Support and Fundraising Efforts
Luke's fundraising mission has received overwhelming support from his colleagues and the inmates at Swinfen Hall YOI. Staff and prisoners across all nine wings of the Staffordshire facility will run three miles on their sports field, collectively covering the equivalent of a marathon distance before the London Marathon takes place.
Additional fundraising activities include a charity cake sale, with all proceeds going to Spinal Research. Members of the public can also contribute through Luke's JustGiving page, supporting his goal of funding life-changing breakthroughs for paralysis victims.
The Reality of Spinal Cord Injuries
Suzanne Redding, head of audience and community for Spinal Research, highlighted the sobering statistics surrounding spinal cord injuries. "Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed after a spinal cord injury," she noted. "Contrary to popular belief, the most common cause isn't sporting activities but falls, followed by road traffic accidents."
Redding expressed gratitude for Luke's participation in the London Marathon, stating, "We're incredibly grateful to Luke for joining this year's London Marathon 'Team Spinal' in honour of his amazing Mum Sandra. Every pound raised takes us a step closer to our goal of curing paralysis."
Luke, who has never run a marathon before, is receiving support from his partner Craig and their six-year-old son Charlie. However, his primary motivation remains his mother's incredible resilience. "This is more than just a run," Luke emphasised. "It's for my mum, for every family facing the same journey, and for a future filled with hope."
