New Cancer Support Choir Launches in Aberdeen Open to All
New Cancer Support Choir Launches in Aberdeen

A new community choir is launching in Aberdeen to provide support and connection for anyone affected by cancer, whether through their own diagnosis or by supporting a loved one. The group, organized by Clan Cancer Support, is open to all adults across the north-east of Scotland, with no auditions required and all singing abilities welcome.

Weekly Rehearsals and Performance Goals

Weekly rehearsals will take place at Clan House in Aberdeen starting next month. Members will work towards a major performance in March 2027 and will also sing at other charity events throughout the year. The choir aims to build a varied repertoire while helping participants find their voice in a supportive environment.

Experienced Leadership with Personal Connection

The choir will be led by experienced musician and choirmaster Laura Kirkwood, who brings both professional expertise and a personal connection to the cause. Kirkwood previously completed a 100-mile walking challenge in memory of her grandfather, raising over £800 to help fund the support group. Her grandfather stayed at Clan House while undergoing treatment last year, and the support the family received inspired her to get involved.

“I’ve previously been involved in community choirs and have seen first-hand the joy, togetherness and confidence they can build,” Kirkwood said. “What especially drew me to Clan was my own personal connection. My grandfather stayed at Clan House while undergoing treatment last year, and the support meant so much to us as a family. Being part of something that brings people together through music, with that shared understanding, feels incredibly special.”

Reviving a Successful Model

Fiona Fernie, chief executive at Clan Cancer Support, highlighted that the choir revives a pre-Covid singing group that was enjoyed by many. “Before Covid, Clan ran a successful singing group that was enjoyed by many people, and it’s brilliant to see this being resurrected and reimagined for a new audience,” Fernie said. “We know that cancer affects every aspect of life, and opportunities like this can make a real difference by bringing people together and boosting wellbeing, while offering a supportive environment through Clan. You don’t need any singing experience, just a willingness to take part and be part of something positive.”

How to Get Involved

The charity is now inviting adults from across the region to sign up. An information session will be held next month for those interested in taking part. The choir is free to join, and applications are open until Friday, August 14. For more information and to apply, visit the Clan Choir Application Form online.
