Rochford Leisure Centre to Host Inspirational World Cancer Day Community Gathering

Clements Hall Leisure Centre, operated by Everyone Active in partnership with Rochford District Council, is preparing to host a significant community event in observance of World Cancer Day. This special occasion, scheduled for Wednesday, February 4, from 11am to 3pm, aims to foster a supportive environment focused on activity, awareness, and connection for local residents, leisure centre users, and support organisations alike.

The event is open to both members and non-members, creating an inclusive space where individuals can participate in wellbeing activities and gain valuable insights into the cancer support services available within the local area. It serves as a poignant tribute to two remarkable individuals whose personal journeys have deeply inspired the Rochford community.

Honouring Local Stories of Resilience and Strength

The day will pay heartfelt homage to Eleanor Johnson, a front-of-house receptionist at Clements Hall Leisure Centre, who received a diagnosis of Bulky Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in October 2024 and is now in remission. Her courage and determination have been a source of motivation for many.

Additionally, the event will celebrate long-standing customer Karen Hampson, who was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in 2021. Karen continues to inspire others through her unwavering commitment to exercise and overall wellbeing, demonstrating the powerful role of physical activity during and after cancer treatment.

A Diverse Programme of Activities and Support

Visitors to the event can look forward to a varied schedule of fitness and relaxation sessions designed to promote both physical and mental health. The programme includes:

  • A functional strength class to encourage physical resilience.
  • Tai chi sessions for gentle movement and mindfulness.
  • Mindfulness activities aimed at reducing stress and enhancing emotional wellbeing.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear directly from cancer survivors and individuals currently living with a diagnosis. These personal accounts will share experiences and offer encouragement, fostering a sense of community and mutual support.

Comprehensive Information and Guidance Available

A number of local and national charities and support groups will be present with information stalls, providing essential advice and guidance for anyone affected by cancer, including families and carers. Participating organisations include:

  • Copes
  • CADGERS Cancer Support Group
  • Lady McAdden
  • Gold Geese
  • Macmillan
  • Lace

Community and Council Support for the Initiative

Dan Humphries, area contract manager at Everyone Active, emphasised the importance of community solidarity in raising awareness and showing support for those touched by cancer. He praised the strength and positivity exhibited by both Eleanor and Karen, highlighting the centre’s ongoing dedication to promoting health and wellbeing in Rochford.

Councillor Mike Webb, Chair of Rochford District Council’s Communities, Wellbeing & Housing Committee, noted that the event exemplifies how local partnerships can create meaningful spaces for connection, learning, and support. It underscores the vital role of physical activity in cancer care while encouraging open conversations and community bonding in an inclusive setting.
