Bradford Couple Celebrates 64th Valentine's Day with Romantic First Date Recreation

In a heartwarming celebration of enduring love, a Bradford couple who met over six decades ago marked their 64th Valentine's Day together with a nostalgic twist, recreating the very meal they shared on their first date in 1962. Annie, aged 97, and Donald, aged 95, Marshall, residents at Bingley Park care home in Bradford, were treated to this special occasion by the home's dedicated staff.

A Blast from the Past: The 1962 Date

Recalling their initial romantic encounter, Annie fondly remembered, "We shared a steak at a hotel in Halifax and the chef cooked it on the table right in front of us, it was very romantic." While head chef Claire Scarratt couldn't replicate the exact tableside cooking, she ingeniously served the steak on a sizzling platter to add a theatrical flair to the meal, capturing the essence of that memorable evening.

From Mill Workers to Lifelong Partners

The couple, both born and raised in Bradford, first crossed paths while working at Smiths Mill in 1962 and quickly fell in love. Prior to that, Annie had been employed packing crisps at Seabrook Crisps, and Donald worked at Black Dyke Mills. They tied the knot in November 1963, settled in Bradford, and welcomed their son, Francis. After moving into Bingley Park care home together in March 2025, staff were inspired to reignite their happy memories and commemorate this milestone Valentine's Day in a uniquely romantic way.

Staff Efforts to Create a Special Moment

Home manager Martin Deakin expressed, "When it comes to long-lasting love, Annie and Donald are a true representation and we could all see this from the moment they moved in. We wanted to do something extra special for them and recreating their first dinner date together seems like the perfect way to mark such a milestone. A big thanks to Claire who pulled out all the stops." Chef Claire prepared a delightful menu featuring:

  • Starter: Vegetable soup
  • Main course: Sizzling fillet steak with new potatoes and green beans
  • Dessert: Fruit trifle
  • Accompaniment: A glass of bubbly

Annie remarked, "It was such a lovely surprise to have a personalised meal with Donald and the steak was delicious."

The Secret to a Lasting Marriage

When asked about the key to their enduring relationship, Annie and Donald offered simple yet profound advice: "Take every day as it comes. Get over arguments and move on. Remain friends." This celebration not only honored their love story but also served as an inspiration for couples everywhere, showcasing the beauty of commitment and shared memories over the decades.
