Byron House Care Home Opens Accessible Potting Shed with Mayor's Visit
Byron House Care Home Opens Accessible Potting Shed

Byron House Care Home in Aylesbury has celebrated the official opening of a brand-new potting shed designed to bring residents together and promote well-being through gardening. The Mayor of Aylesbury, Councillor Nidhi Mehta, joined residents and guests to cut the ribbon on May 1, marking the completion of a thoughtful addition to the home's garden.

A Garden Party Celebration

The home hosted a garden party with tea and prosecco to welcome family, friends, and neighbours for the special occasion. Renjini from Byron House led the ceremony before the Mayor officially declared the new space open. It was a lovely reminder of the strong relationships that make the home such a warm part of the local community.

Accessibility at the Heart of the Project

Accessibility was a priority for the project to ensure every person living at the home can join in. Matt, who handles maintenance, completely redesigned the garden pathway with wide, tiled tracks. Raised potting beds are now at the perfect height for both standing residents and those who use wheelchairs. Shelving and storage were also carefully positioned to make gardening comfortable and inclusive for everyone.

Linda from the home said: "It has been such a labour of love from start to finish. So much time, effort and thought has gone into every single detail, to make sure it’s perfect for our residents. Seeing it all come together and being enjoyed by everyone today makes every minute worth it."

Creative Touches and Future Plans

Head Chef Donna embraced the theme by serving delicious appetisers shaped like snails and ladybirds. Residents spent the afternoon chatting about future projects and entering the Westgate in Bloom competition. The project highlights the teamwork and passion of the staff who wanted to create a space for people to flourish.

Renjini said: "What a truly wonderful day it has been. We were honoured to welcome the Mayor as well as Tara and all our guests to share in this special occasion. This potting shed is more than just a building; it’s a place where our residents can grow, connect and thrive, and that is what makes Byron House so special."

A Place to Grow and Thrive

Tara from Westgate Healthcare said: "I am incredibly proud of the team at Byron House. The opening of the potting corner is a wonderful example of the care, thought, and understanding that goes into everything they do. Every detail of this space has been carefully considered with our residents in mind. From creating opportunities for meaningful activity, to encouraging connection, independence and a sense of purpose."

The new shed is a place where people can build confidence and take pride in nurturing something beautiful. Everyone at the home is now looking forward to watching their new garden grow in the months ahead.
