A vital free event designed to support individuals and families navigating life with Parkinson's disease is set to take place in Blackpool later this month. Organised by the charity Parkinson's UK, the gathering aims to provide crucial information, foster community connections, and showcase local activities.
Event Details and What to Expect
The session will be held on Wednesday, January 21, from 11am to 2pm. The venue is The Grange, 2a Dinmore Avenue, Blackpool, FY3 7RW. Attendees will be treated to a free lunch and have the opportunity to meet a range of specialists.
These will include local advisors from Parkinson's UK, volunteers from support groups, health professionals, and activity providers. A highlight of the day will be a dance taster session led by LPM Dance, an organisation known for running accessible dance classes, including specific sessions for people with Parkinson's.
Why This Support is Critical
Helen Sturman, Area Development Manager for the North West at Parkinson's UK, emphasised the importance of timely support. "Being diagnosed with Parkinson's can be a shock and adapting to life with the condition can be hard for the person involved and their loved ones too," she said. "We know getting the right information and support at the right time can make all the difference."
Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition with over 40 potential symptoms, such as tremor, pain, and anxiety. Currently, there is no cure. The scale of the condition is significant:
- In the UK, a new diagnosis is made every 20 minutes.
- Globally, the number of people living with Parkinson's is expected to double to 25 million by 2050.
- In the North West, approximately 17,200 people live with the condition, including an estimated 375 residents in Blackpool.
How to Get Involved and Find Further Support
Helen Sturman encourages local residents to attend. "I'm pleased to be hosting this free event in Blackpool, and would encourage anyone nearby who is affected by Parkinson's to get in touch and come along," she stated.
