A driver has died after suffering a medical emergency at the wheel in a south Birmingham suburb this morning.
Emergency response on Wake Green Road
Paramedics were called to Wake Green Road in Moseley at 7.28am on Monday, December 22, following reports of a medical emergency involving a person in a car. A rapid response was dispatched to the scene, including an ambulance, a paramedic officer, a trauma team and a BASICS emergency doctor.
Upon arrival, crews discovered the driver, a man, in a critical condition. Despite the immediate and extensive efforts of the medical teams, his life could not be saved. He was confirmed deceased at the scene a short time later.
Major disruption for morning commuters
The incident, which was initially reported as a road traffic collision to West Midlands Roads, led to significant disruption during the Monday morning rush hour. Police sealed off Wake Green Road near its junction with School Road for several hours to allow for investigations.
Local bus services were heavily affected. The number 1 and 41 bus routes were diverted away from the area, causing delays for passengers. Motorists were urged to avoid the locality and to plan ahead, allowing extra time for their journeys or seeking alternative routes.
Statements from the authorities
A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service provided a detailed account of the response to BirminghamLive. They confirmed the nature of the call and the extensive resources sent to assist the driver.
The spokesperson stated: "Despite the best efforts of ambulance staff nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed deceased on scene a short time later."
West Midlands Roads had earlier issued a warning to drivers, stating the road was partially blocked due to a collision and advising careful travel planning.
The police cordon remained in place for a considerable period as officers worked at the location. BirminghamLive has contacted West Midlands Police for further comment on the tragic incident.
