Midlands Braces for 30cm Snow: Met Office Issues Yellow Warning
Midlands faces 11 inches of snow on Sunday

The Met Office has issued a fresh yellow weather warning for snow across parts of the Midlands, with some areas potentially facing accumulations of up to 30 centimetres (11 inches) this Sunday.

Warning Details and Forecast

The alert is active from 2am until 3pm on Sunday, January 11, 2026. Forecasters predict a band of snow will sweep across the warning area throughout Sunday morning. While not all low-lying areas will see settling snow, the Met Office indicates 2 to 5cm is likely, with a chance of 10cm in some places.

However, the significant accumulations are expected above 200 metres in elevation, where 10 to 20cm is possible. On hills exposed to strong southerly winds, and over the highest parts of Scotland, there is a potential for localised accumulations reaching 30cm.

Affected Towns and Travel Disruption

The warning specifically covers numerous towns in Staffordshire. Residents in the following areas should prepare for disruptive conditions:

  • Stafford
  • Lichfield
  • Stoke-on-Trent
  • Cannock and Tamworth
  • Burton upon Trent
  • Newcastle-under-Lyme
  • Leek, Biddulph, and Stone
  • Rugeley, Cheadle, Kidsgrove, and Uttoxeter

The Met Office has cautioned that strong winds may lead to drifting snow and widespread icy conditions, creating hazardous travel. This follows recent disruption from Storm Goretti, which prompted Cornwall Council to advise against travel on Friday morning due to fallen trees and downed power lines.

Public Advice and Safety

Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution. The Council of the Isles of Scilly, after experiencing "violent gusts," has echoed the sentiment, asking people to only travel if absolutely necessary and to give emergency and highways teams space to work.

With the potential for significant snowfall and icy roads, residents in the warned areas are advised to monitor updates from the Met Office and local authorities, and to reconsider any non-essential journeys on Sunday.
