Major Police Investigation into Former Midlands Gynaecologist Over Surgery Complaints
Police Probe Former Midlands Gynaecologist Over Surgery Complaints

A former Midlands gynaecologist is now the subject of a significant police investigation following numerous complaints from women who underwent surgical procedures under his care. Derbyshire Constabulary has confirmed it is examining what it describes as 'complex' allegations related to operations performed during the 2010s.

Scope of the Investigation

The investigation initially encompassed a total of 36 separate cases involving women who had surgeries in the previous decade. However, in a recent development, police have decided that no further action will be taken regarding six of these cases after a thorough review.

Expert Medical Consultation

The force has emphasised the complexity of the probe, which involves consulting with independent specialist medical professionals and examining substantial amounts of material. This meticulous approach has contributed to the investigation's extended timeline, but authorities stress the importance of conducting diligent and comprehensive enquiries.

Current Status of Cases

Regarding the six cases where no further action will be pursued, Derbyshire Constabulary stated: 'Cases relating to six women have been reviewed by an expert medical professional – and that information was passed, along with other evidence gathered by the investigation team, to the Crown Prosecution Service for early advice.'

The force explained that following receipt of this advice, the decision was made because these particular cases did not meet the evidential threshold required for prosecution. The affected women have been updated about this development and informed of their right to request a Victim's Right to Review.

Ongoing Review Process

Police continue to investigate the remaining 30 cases, with no decisions yet made regarding their outcomes. The investigation team maintains regular engagement with all affected individuals as the process moves forward.

Derbyshire Constabulary added: 'The investigation into these allegations is complex, involving large amounts of material and independent specialist medical professionals being consulted. While this has meant that enquiries have taken a significant length of time it is important that these enquiries are undertaken in a diligent and comprehensive way.'

The force has committed to continuing its engagement with those affected throughout the investigation's progression, underscoring the sensitive nature of medical complaints and the thorough approach required in such cases.
