A senior NHS doctor has issued an urgent warning to millions of Britons taking the common heartburn medication omeprazole, emphasising that patients should not stop taking it abruptly without medical supervision.
Dr. Raj Arora, an NHS GP and medical educator, highlighted the critical importance of proper medication management for this widely-prescribed drug, which is used by countless patients across the UK to manage acid reflux and stomach acid-related conditions.
The Dangers of Sudden Discontinuation
"Many patients don't realise that stopping omeprazole suddenly can cause what we call 'rebound acid secretion,'" Dr. Arora explained. "This means your stomach may produce even more acid than before you started treatment, leading to severe discomfort and potentially dangerous complications."
