The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is increasing Winter Fuel Payments by £100 for state pensioners who live alone. Under the current government, the Winter Fuel Payment will return this coming winter, offering financial support to eligible individuals.
Eligibility and Payment Amounts
If you were born before 28 June 1960, you could receive between £100 and £300 to help with heating bills for winter 2026 to 2027. The DWP explains: "You will receive a letter in October or November detailing your Winter Fuel Payment amount if you are eligible. If you do not receive a letter but believe you are eligible, check if you need to make a claim."
The amount you receive is based on your birth date and your circumstances during the qualifying week, which is 21 to 27 September 2026. Importantly, any payment you receive will not affect your other benefits.
Payments for Those Living Alone
If you live alone or no one you live with is eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, you will receive £200 if you were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960. If you were born before 28 September 1946, you will receive £300. The deadline for claims for winter 2025 to 2026 was 31 March 2026, but claims for winter 2026 to 2027 open from 21 September 2026.
Payments for Households with Two People
For households with two eligible individuals, the payment structure is more complex. If both people are aged 80 or over, the total payment of £300 is split evenly, with each person receiving £150. If one person is 80 or over and the other is under 80 (and eligible), the older person receives £200 and the younger person receives £100, for a total of £300. If both are under 80 and eligible, each receives £100, totalling £200. If only one person is eligible, that person receives £200 if under 80, or £300 if 80 or over.
This increase aims to provide additional support to pensioners living alone, helping them manage heating costs during the colder months.
