The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has upgraded Attendance Allowance to £458 a month, following the April inflation hike. In May, state pensioners who qualify for Attendance Allowance will receive the increased amount, reflecting the rising cost of living.
This benefit is designed for state pensioners with disabilities who require additional support. The higher rate now stands at £114.60 per week, or approximately £458 per month, and is intended for those who need help or supervision both during the day and at night. Currently, around half a million people claim Attendance Allowance for arthritis alone.

Age UK, a leading charity, offers valuable advice for Attendance Allowance applicants. The charity recommends describing any accidents, falls, or injuries, and explaining how different health conditions interact. For instance, if you have arthritis along with mental health challenges that affect motivation, mention how the combination impacts daily tasks like washing and dressing.
Since there are several types of arthritis, it is crucial to know which one you have. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition, can make moving joints difficult and painful. Age UK advises: "List things that you struggle to do unaided, even if you have developed ways to cope. If an activity takes you much longer due to your disability or illness, or if it is difficult to do safely, include that. Also, mention if you need reminding or encouraging to do things."
Other Conditions and Lower Rate
Other conditions, such as lupus, can also cause pain and swelling in joints. The charity adds: "Focus on how frequently you need help. For example, if you need help looking after your appearance, include that you need assistance to check your clothes are clean after a meal, help to find a coat and matching shoes, and so on." You can qualify for the lower rate of Attendance Allowance if you need help frequently during the day or night.
