DWP Universal Credit payments rise £530/month for families with children
DWP: Universal Credit up £530/month for families with children

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is under renewed pressure after data revealed that Universal Credit claimants have reached an all-time high of 8.3 million. The caseload figures show a significant increase in the number of people claiming the benefit.

Universal Credit Payment Differences

Families with children make up 44 per cent of paying households. Couples with children receive the highest average monthly payments at £1,330, while single people without children receive the least at £800. The average monthly payment across all households now stands at £1,030. This means families with children receive £530 more per month than single people without children.

Two-Child Limit Removal

From April 2026, the two-child limit on Universal Credit will be removed. This change will allow families to receive support for all their children, regardless of family size. The government estimates this will lift 450,000 children out of poverty and ensure they have the best start in life.

Childcare Cost Support

Universal Credit can help with childcare costs. Eligible claimants can claim up to 85 per cent of registered childcare costs if they are in paid work or due to start a job within the next month. Claimants must pay for childcare upfront and then report the costs through their Universal Credit account to receive reimbursement in the next payment.

The maximum amount for each assessment period is £1,071.09 for one child or £1,836.16 for two or more children. Reimbursement is provided after the childcare takes place. Claimants can claim Universal Credit childcare costs for all children they are responsible for until the 31 August after the child's 16th birthday.
