Youngsters Flip and Twist with Olympians at Gymnastics Day

Youngsters enjoyed a day of flips, twists and tumbles during an unforgettable gymnastics adventure before getting the chance to quiz real-life Olympians.

The session was organised by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) for children who are either bereaved or have a brother or sister receiving care at Milton. Fourteen siblings took part in the event at Huntingdon Olympic Gym, springing into action during a high-energy, coach-led session.

After splitting into age groups, they quite literally rose to the challenge, practising cartwheels, perfecting forward rolls and bouncing sky-high on trampolines. They made full use of the equipment available, jumping, balancing and flipping their way through an action-packed session, before getting the chance to meet Team GB gymnasts Jake Jarman and Sol Scott.

The pair were on hand to chat with the group, answering questions about their training, competitions and what it takes to reach elite level. The siblings also enjoyed watching part of their training session while eating lunch.

Ceri Dobson, EACH’s groups and events co-ordinator at Milton, said: “Our sibling days are so important, giving the children an opportunity to have fun and just be themselves. Opportunities like this help them build confidence, make friendships and create joyful memories. It gives them the spotlight they truly deserve, and seeing them rise to every challenge – from cartwheels to fearless jumps - was truly amazing. Our sincere thanks go to Huntingdon Olympic Gym, the team who ran the sessions and helped organise the day and, of course, Jake and Sol. Meeting elite athletes and seeing their dedication was genuinely inspirational.”

The day started and finished at Milton, where the group travelled by coach courtesy of Dews Coaches. The Cambridge-based company is a long-term supporter and provides transport for sibling days completely free of charge.
