New Support Programme Launches for Essex Carers of Personality Disorder Patients
Carers supporting individuals diagnosed with personality disorders and complex needs in Essex are being invited to join a newly established educational course. This initiative aims to equip them with enhanced knowledge and practical strategies to better support both their loved ones and their own wellbeing.
Programme Details and Schedule
The Skills for Carers programme, organised by the Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, is scheduled to run from February 9 to March 23. Sessions will be held every Monday evening from 6pm to 8pm at the MIND centre in West Essex, located at 45 Stortford Road, Great Dunmow. The course is open to any carers residing across Essex who are able to attend these in-person meetings.
Comprehensive Weekly Topics
Each week, the course will cover a distinct set of topics designed to provide a thorough understanding of caregiving in this context. The curriculum includes:
- An exploration of what borderline personality disorder entails
- Information on carers' legal rights and entitlements
- Techniques for managing emotions and practising validation
- Strategies for improving the family environment
- Practical problem-solving approaches for common challenges
Interactive Learning and Expert Leadership
Claire O'Connor, the Skills for Carers Project Lead, emphasised the interactive nature of the sessions. "We incorporate discussions, role plays, and group exercises that encourage carers to share their personal experiences," she explained. "Our pilot programme demonstrated that this approach significantly reduces feelings of isolation and allows participants to exchange valuable, practical tips with one another."
The programme is led by Claire O'Connor alongside a qualified family therapist and a family and carer ambassador who brings lived experience of caring for someone with complex needs. This combination of professional expertise and personal insight ensures a balanced and empathetic learning environment.
Proven Success from Pilot Programme
A pilot version of the course was conducted from September to November last year with a group of six carers. By the conclusion of the programme, every participant reported feeling more supported and better equipped with skills to manage and enhance their relationship with their loved one.
Participant feedback highlighted the course's positive impact. One carer remarked, "Thank you, it has been a great experience, and I have learned so much, as well as being able to talk about my situation and learn from others." Another added, "It has given me confidence to deal with and relate to my situation. I can't thank you enough for such a great course."
