A Hinckley man is actively challenging the stigma surrounding men's mental health by completing a rigorous daily 5km running challenge throughout the entire month of February. Kyle Schuler, who works as an operations manager at the Amazon fulfilment centre in Hinckley, undertook this persistent effort to cover a total of 140km, all while raising crucial funds for Andy's Man Club. This charity holds a special place in his heart, as he credits it with providing vital support during his own personal struggles last year.
Personal Struggles and a Turning Point
After facing significant difficulties in his personal life, Kyle found himself becoming increasingly inactive and grappling with his overall wellbeing. He explained, "I was staying in the house and becoming less active just because I wasn't in a good frame of mind." This period of low motivation and mental health challenges prompted him to seek a positive change.
Forming a Supportive Fitness Group
Kyle reached out to two friends, and together they created a fitness challenge designed to hold each other accountable. What began as a simple four-week programme quickly evolved into a year-long commitment. The group consistently shared their workouts four or five times a week, providing mutual motivation and encouragement.
Reflecting on the transformative impact, Kyle said, "I lost a lot of weight, I was a lot happier in myself, and it brought us closer together as well. I got to the end of the year, and I was in a much different place than I was at the start and much of that was down to my improved fitness."
Inspiring a February Fundraiser
Kyle's remarkable fitness journey and personal growth inspired him to launch a February fundraiser dedicated to Andy's Man Club. Despite facing obstacles such as snow on their very first night's run, he remained steadfast in his commitment. He expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am very lucky. I have a supportive family and friends, and everyone here at Amazon in Hinckley was really supportive while I was going through a tough time. Giving back to the charity will allow people that don't have that strong support network to actually find help and be able to speak with people that are going through the same thing."
Overwhelming Support from the Amazon Team
The team at Amazon's Hinckley site has wholeheartedly rallied behind Kyle's efforts. Initially setting a modest target of £1,000, donations have already soared past £1,500, with support pouring in from colleagues across the site. Additionally, proceeds from the site's annual post-Christmas celebration event were generously donated to the campaign.
Sooraj Sitaram, the site leader at Amazon in Hinckley, added, "We are incredibly proud of Kyle for using his personal experience to help others. His commitment to supporting men's mental health through this challenge is inspiring, and the entire team at Amazon Hinckley is behind him every step of the way."
Accountability and Community Engagement
To maintain accountability and keep supporters informed throughout the month, Kyle diligently tracked his daily runs on the fitness app Strava. This transparency not only helped him stay on track but also engaged the community in his journey. The fundraiser highlights the powerful combination of personal resilience, community support, and charitable giving in addressing critical mental health issues.
