A paediatric nurse from Seasalter has channelled her own profound loss into creating a vital new support network for bereaved parents across Kent. Amber Selvey has launched 'Together in Grief', a peer-led support group offering a safe space for parents who have experienced the death of a child.
A Lifeline Forged from Personal Tragedy
Amber's motivation stems from heartbreaking personal experience. In 2023, she lost her 24-year-old son, and in 2017, her 47-year-old husband. Both died from Alagille Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. After more than two decades working in paediatric nursing in East Kent, she understands the unique and isolating pain of such a loss.
"Launching this group is something I feel called to do," said Amber Selvey. The concept took shape while she was studying for a degree in Counselling, Coaching, and Mentoring at Canterbury Christ Church University.
Foundation and Golf Club Back Vital Training
The group's creation was made possible through the financial support of The Evie Dove Foundation. The charity, set up in memory of 13-year-old Evie Dove who died from incurable brain cancer in 2022, awarded Amber two grants of £5,000 for her first and second years of study.
"Amber's compassion and expertise have a profound impact on children and their families," said Howard Dove, a Trustee at the Foundation. "By funding specialist training for talented paediatric healthcare professionals, like Amber, we can spread Evie's sparkle and help keep compassion at the heart of paediatric care."
Her second-year grant was specifically funded by The Royal St George's Golf Club. "Amber's story moved all of us," said club Trustee Rob Moulsdale. "Her commitment to supporting families is extraordinary, and we are proud to help make her training possible."
A Monthly Meeting Point in Whitstable
The 'Together in Grief' group now offers a regular, face-to-face haven. It meets at Revival Food and Mood in Whitstable on the third Wednesday of every month, from 7pm to 8pm.
Amber hopes the sessions will provide parents with a crucial opportunity to talk, listen, and connect with others who truly understand their journey. She also notes that her further qualifications are enhancing the support she can offer in her nursing role, particularly for children dealing with emotional distress or hospital anxiety.
To date, The Evie Dove Foundation has raised over £425,000 and funded training for more than 200 children's healthcare professionals across the UK.
