RSPCA Urges Dog Owners: Follow Heatwave Safety Tips
RSPCA Heatwave Warning for Dog Owners

The RSPCA has issued crucial advice for dog owners as temperatures soar above 30°C in parts of the UK this Bank Holiday weekend, with a health alert in effect. The charity emphasizes that pet owners must adjust routines to keep their animals safe during the heatwave.

RSPCA Warning on Hot Walks

The RSPCA released a distressing video showing a dog suffering from overheating, with a stark message: “Involving your pooch in your family outings may feel like the right thing to do this summer, but when the weather gets hot, there are some considerations and practical steps that we must take to ensure our dog's health and welfare is always being prioritised. Dogs sadly die on hot walks. If in doubt, don't go out! Spotting the signs of overheating could mean the difference between life and death.”

What to Do if Your Dog Has Heatstroke

Cool your pet down before transporting them to the vet. First steps:

  • Stop exercise or movement
  • Remove the dog from hot vehicles or buildings
  • Get out of the sun immediately

Cool your pet by:

  • Pouring cool water over your pet from the neck down (avoid the head)
  • Submerging the bottom half in cool water (bath or paddling pool) if not a senior dog
  • Misting senior dogs with cool water instead
  • Fanning your dog to create a breeze

Then transport to a vet in a well-ventilated vehicle, calling ahead to warn them. Provide plenty of water and stay calm. These steps can save your dog’s life.
