The Department for Work and Pensions is issuing automatic Winter Fuel Payments of £200 or £300 to state pensioners born before 1960. All state pensioners who have reached state pension age and were born before 1960 are eligible for this tax-free payment to help with winter heating costs.
Payment Rates and Eligibility
The Winter Fuel Payment is paid at two rates: £200 for younger state pensioners and £300 for those aged 80 and over. Crucially, every person of state pension age will receive some amount. The payment is a government grant from the Labour Party, given to eligible pensioner households to offset heating expenses during the colder months.
Previously, the scheme provided up to £300 each winter to all households with someone at state pension age. However, for winter 2024/25, it was restricted to those on Pension Credit or certain other benefits. Following a policy reversal, the allowance has been reinstated for all state pensioners.
Repayment Rules
Consumer expert Rebecca Wilcox appeared on BBC Morning Live to explain repayment obligations. Anyone whose total personal income exceeds £35,000 during the relevant tax year must repay the full payment. In most cases, the money will be recovered automatically through the tax system. HMRC will adjust the person's tax code in the 2026-2027 tax year, resulting in slightly higher monthly tax deductions.
Wilcox warned that the repayment process could create opportunities for scammers. She stated: "Fraudsters often send messages pretending to be from government departments asking for personal details or payment." HMRC has confirmed that official letters about Winter Fuel Payment repayments will clearly state that no action is required and will never ask for personal or financial information. Recipients should discard any suspicious messages requesting such details.
