Father of 18-Year-Old Meningitis Victim Shares Sudden Symptoms That Led to Tragic Death

The father of an 18-year-old student who tragically passed away following a meningitis outbreak in Kent has spoken out about his daughter's sudden death, revealing symptoms appeared and escalated within a devastatingly short timeframe.

Juliette Kenny, a sixth-form student at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Faversham, sadly passed away last Saturday. Her father, Michael Kenny, shared that she had been "fit, healthy and strong" and had only completed the practical assessment for her PE A-level two days before her death.

Sudden Onset of Symptoms

Juliette first fell ill in the early hours of March 13. Michael described how discoloration appeared on her cheeks alongside vomiting. "In the morning on Friday, she was taken, by us, to our local emergency drop-in as discoloration appeared on her cheeks," he said. "She was given antibiotics and sent by ambulance to A&E."

Despite rapid medical intervention, the situation deteriorated quickly. "Juliette fought bravely for hours, but despite the fantastic NHS hospital staff fighting alongside her, meningitis took her from us less than 12 hours later," Michael recounted. "We were with her at the end, and the last sounds that she heard were the voices of those who loved her telling her how very much loved and cherished she is."

Family's Heartbreak and Call to Action

Michael expressed that his family's heartbreak is "immeasurable." In a statement, he said: "We are incredibly proud parents to two wonderful daughters. Juliette is a force in this world. With her beautifully positive energy, she spread fun, love and happiness to those around her and she continues to do so now."

He emphasized that sharing stories of Juliette's empathy, warmth, and fun is helping her family and friends through this difficult time. Juliette is one of two students who have died following the meningitis B outbreak in the county.

Urgent Plea for Enhanced Vaccination Access

Together with the Meningitis Research Foundation, the Kenny family is urging the UK to take immediate action to enhance access to the MenB vaccination for teenagers and young adults. "No family should experience this pain and tragedy," Michael stated. "This can be avoided. There are young people currently battling this and young people still at risk."

He added: "As parents, we knew our children would change the world and be a force for good. The work to protect young people has started. It needs to be more. Juliette's impact on this world must be lasting change. Now is the time to ensure families are safe from the impact of meningitis B."

The family's advocacy highlights the critical importance of vaccination and public health awareness in preventing similar tragedies.
