Tragic Discovery of Liverpool Teenager in Wrexham Lake
A 17-year-old student from Liverpool has been identified after his body was found in a lake near Chirk Castle in Wrexham. The teenager, named as Ashamekh Bortata, was discovered on 7 April, with an inquest into his death opened this week.
Inquest Proceedings and Provisional Findings
Coroner John Gittins presided over the inquest opening on Monday at Ruthin in North Wales. He detailed that emergency services received a 999 call on the afternoon of 7 April from a friend of the teenager, reporting that Ashamekh was in the lake and drowning.
Police responded to the scene, where they encountered several young people who had travelled from the Liverpool area. The group had walked through the castle grounds, encountered woodland, and approached the lake, where Ashamekh entered the water.
North Wales Fire Service also attended, conducting an initial search. The operation continued into the next day, when police divers located the body. A pathologist has provided a provisional cause of death as drowning, though further investigation is required.

Coroner Gittins emphasized the necessity of proceeding with a full inquest, stating, "Clearly it's a matter which must now proceed to an inquest." The hearing has been adjourned to allow for additional inquiries into the circumstances surrounding this tragedy.
