Two of the UK's leading supermarkets have issued an urgent product safety warning, urging customers to check their cupboards for specific packets of crisps that may pose a serious health risk.
Immediate Action Required for Allergy Sufferers
Tesco and Lidl have both announced a recall of certain Calbee potato chip products due to the presence of undeclared allergens. The recall is a precautionary measure to protect customers with specific food allergies or intolerances, which can trigger severe reactions.
Tesco, the nation's largest grocer, is recalling two varieties: Calbee Hot & Spicy Potato Chips (55g) and Calbee Pizza Potato Chips (55g). Lidl has followed suit with an identical warning for the same products sold in its stores.
Specific Products and Dates Affected
The recall applies to very specific batches. For the Calbee Hot & Spicy Potato Chips 55g, all packets with a best before date up to and including 05 June 2026 are affected. This is due to the presence of undeclared mustard, a potential hazard for those allergic or intolerant to it.
For the Calbee Pizza Potato Chips 55g, the recall covers all best before dates up to and including 28 April 2026. These contain undeclared celery, which poses a risk to individuals with a celery allergy or intolerance.
What Customers Should Do Now
Both supermarkets have issued clear instructions for anyone who has purchased the affected items. If you have an allergy or intolerance to mustard or celery, you must not consume these crisps.
Tesco advises customers to return the product to any Tesco store for a full refund, and no receipt is required. Lidl has provided two options: either dispose of the product safely or return it to the store where it was bought.
For further information, consumers can contact Calbee UK directly by emailing consumercare@calbee.co.uk or calling 0330 660 0015. Tesco customers can also reach out via the supermarket's own customer services channels.
Both retailers have apologised for any inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their cooperation in this important safety matter.
