The Beeches pub in Great Barr, Birmingham, has decided not to show a potential late-night England World Cup match, days after disorder broke out during a previous screening. The pub will broadcast England's game against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday (July 1), but if England qualify, their next match would kick off at 1am on Monday morning (July 6), and the pub will not show it.
Violence at previous watch party
The decision follows violence during a watch party for the England vs Ghana match on Tuesday, June 23. Footage circulated online showed people punching each other, and a machete was reportedly recovered by officers at the Great Barr pub. West Midlands Police attended the scene.
Pub's statement on social media
On social media, The Beeches posted: "England Match – Sunday 5th July. If England progress following Wednesday’s game, their next match is scheduled to kick off at 1:00am on Monday morning (following Sunday, 5th July). Last orders will be 9.30pm - Close at 10pm."
The statement continued: "After careful consideration of the welfare of our team and our local community, we have made the decision not to show the match should England qualify. We appreciate your understanding and support. We will keep everyone updated regarding any future England fixtures."
Community and staff consultation
The Beeches consulted with staff and the local community before making the decision. The pub will remain open for regular hours on Sunday, July 5, with last orders at 9:30pm and closure at 10pm, but will not screen the early-morning match. Fans will need to find alternative venues for that fixture.
