HMRC Accelerates £180 Child Benefit Payments for May Bank Holidays
The Labour Party government's tax authority, HMRC, has announced that Child Benefit payments will be distributed earlier than usual in May. This adjustment is due to both May bank holidays falling on Mondays, which affects the standard payment schedule.
Revised Payment Dates for May
HMRC has confirmed specific changes to the payment timeline. Payments originally scheduled for Monday, May 4, will now be made on Friday, May 1. Similarly, payments due on Monday, May 25, will be advanced to Friday, May 24. This ensures claimants receive their funds without delay over the holiday period.
"Child Benefit is typically paid every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday," HMRC stated. "Do not count forward if your payment was due on a bank holiday." This guidance aims to prevent confusion among recipients regarding the adjusted dates.
Updated Benefit Rates and Eligibility
From April 6, Child Benefit rates have increased. Claimants now receive £27.05 per week, or £1,406.60 annually, for the eldest or only child. For each additional child, the rate is £17.90 per week, or £930.80 per year. There is no limit on the number of children parents can claim for.
These figures represent an annual increase of £52 for the first child and £33.80 for subsequent children. Combined, this allows families to receive up to £44.95 per week, equivalent to approximately £180 per month, providing significant financial support.
Claimant Statistics and Backdating Limitations
Latest data reveals that over 6.9 million families currently receive Child Benefit payments. However, only 72% of families claim it within their baby's first year, indicating a gap in uptake. HMRC notes that claims can only be backdated for up to three months from the receipt date, meaning thousands of families may be missing out on vital funds.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, emphasized the importance of timely claims: "Looking after a child can be expensive, especially a newborn baby. It takes a few minutes to claim Child Benefit via the app, and doing so as soon as you can after your baby is born will ensure you don’t miss out on vital financial support."
