HMRC Announces Significant Child Benefit Increase for Millions of Households
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is sending enhanced payments of £1,406 to millions of UK households following a recent rule change, with the increase set to take effect from next week. The tax authority is actively encouraging families who have not yet claimed to use the HMRC app or go online to secure their benefits promptly.
Payment Details and Annual Increases
Starting April 6, claimants will receive £27.05 per week, equivalent to £1,406.60 annually, for the eldest or only child. For each additional child, the rate will be £17.90 per week, or £930.80 per year. This represents an annual increase of £52 for the first child and £33.80 for subsequent children, benefiting over 6.9 million families across the country.
Urgent Call to Action from HMRC
HMRC has issued a warning that thousands of new parents are missing out on these payments by delaying their claims. Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, emphasized the importance of timely action, stating: "Looking after a child can be expensive, especially a newborn baby. It takes a few minutes to claim Child Benefit via the app, and doing so as soon as you can after your baby is born will ensure you don’t miss out on vital financial support."
Using the HMRC app is highlighted as the quickest and easiest method to claim Child Benefit and manage payments efficiently.

Long-Term Benefits of Claiming Child Benefit
Claiming Child Benefit provides recipients with National Insurance (NI) credits that contribute toward future eligibility for the State Pension. This is particularly beneficial for individuals not in paid employment or receiving NI credits through other means, such as Universal Credit.
Additionally, claiming ensures that children automatically receive their National Insurance number when they turn 16, facilitating their entry into the workforce and financial systems.
HMRC’s initiative aims to support families during costly periods of child-rearing, with the rule change delivering substantial financial relief to millions of households nationwide.
