The Mayor of Hyndburn has described the past month as one of the real joys of the role, attending a wide range of community events that celebrate different aspects of the borough. From summer fairs to civic ceremonies, the engagements have highlighted the strength of local communities.
Community Events and Engagements
The month began with the Community Solutions North West Summer Fair, where the Mayor met many of the people and organisations that shape communities daily. This was followed by the official opening of the new pavilion at Great Harwood Bowling Club, a club with a proud history that is a vital part of the sporting scene in Great Harwood, bringing people together through sport, friendship, health, and wellbeing. The Mayor also attended Stanhill Village Fete, which boasted a fantastic atmosphere, plenty of stalls, and local residents coming together to support the school and wider community.
At Accrington Railway Station’s Community Day, organised by Community Rail Lancashire, the Mayor joined volunteers for some planting and saw first-hand the work of the Stations of Welcome group in creating a welcoming gateway to the borough. Their dedication was described as a brilliant example of community pride.
Carnival and Sporting Events
The month also saw the return of the ever-popular Oswaldtwistle Carnival, with streets packed with families, community groups, performers, and volunteers. The Mayor also attended the Pride in Place International Football Celebration event, the Accrington Stanley Community Trust Sunrise to Sunset Walk Challenge, a Mayors Welcome Event at Mercer Hall highlighting the best of Great Harwood, and the Mayor of Ribble Valley’s Civic Sunday event.
Supporting Local Businesses
Supporting local businesses was a highlight. The Mayor spoke at the Hyndburn Business Awards, celebrating the ambition, innovation, and commitment of businesses across the borough. Congratulations were extended to every nominee, finalist, and business represented. The Mayor expressed pride that the Council sponsored the event.
The Mayor also joined GS Social Care as they celebrated 20 years of serving communities, noting that family businesses like these are the backbone of Hyndburn, making a genuine difference to people's lives.
Armed Forces and Civic Ceremonies
The Mayor attended Armed Forces Day commemorations and the 10th Padiham on Parade 1940s weekend, remembering the sacrifices made by those who have served the country, including the Accrington Pals. These occasions remind us never to take freedoms for granted and to remain grateful to those who have dedicated their lives to protecting them.
Reflecting on the pride felt when formally appointed as Mayor of Hyndburn at the Mayor Making Ceremony at Accrington Town Hall, the Mayor shared the stage with sixteen individuals recognised for their services to Hyndburn. Those awarded the Freeman of the Borough include Judith Addison, Pam Barton, Anne Ellwood, Saeeda Farooq, Barbara Fielding, Marlene Haworth, Gwen Mayor, Dave Parkins, Tracy Simmonds, and Mohammed Yaseen. The title of Honorary Alderman was conferred on Josh Allen, Bernard Dawson MBE, June Harrison, Susan Haworth, Joyce Plummer, and Dorothy Westell.
Thanks to Volunteers
Finally, the Mayor thanked the volunteers, organisers, charities, and community groups met throughout the month, stating that their work strengthens communities every day and makes Hyndburn a wonderful place to live.
