Petition Calls for DWP to Boost Christmas Bonus to £180 for State Pensioners
A parliamentary petition is urging the Department for Work and Pensions to provide all state pensioners with a one-off payment of £180, aiming to update the long-frozen Christmas Bonus. The campaign highlights that the £10 bonus, introduced in 1972, has not been adjusted for inflation over decades, making it inadequate for modern costs.
Details of the Petition and Its Demands
The petition, hosted on the official Parliamentary website, states: "Adjust the £10 DWP Christmas Bonus introduced in 1972 to reflect inflation. Adjust the Christmas Bonus given to benefit claimants, from £10 - when it was introduced in 1972 - to reflect inflation (approx £180 in 2025)." It further specifies that the uplift should be available only to British citizens who have been claiming benefits for at least six months.
Explaining the rationale, the petition notes that in the early 1970s, £10 was a significant sum to help with Christmas expenses like heating, food, and gifts for children. Today, that amount would be equivalent to approximately £180 when adjusted for inflation. The petition criticizes the current £10 as "insulting," pointing out that it "won't even buy a round of drinks, wouldn't pay for a quality Christmas pudding or buy a box of decent Christmas Crackers."
Support and Potential Impact of the Campaign
As of now, the petition has garnered 5,052 signatures. If it reaches 10,000 signatures, the Labour Party government will be required to respond. At 100,000 signatures, the petition will be considered for debate in Parliament. Created by David Angus Kirkwood on May 20, 2026, all petitions on the site run for a duration of six months, giving supporters time to rally more backing.
To qualify for the Christmas Bonus, individuals must receive at least one of the specified benefits during the 'qualifying week,' typically the first full week of December. Eligible benefits include:
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance
- Constant Attendance Allowance (under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes)
- Industrial Death Benefit (for widows or widowers)
- Pension Age Disability Payment
- Pension Credit (guarantee element)
- State Pension (including Graduated Retirement Benefit)
- War Disablement Pension at State Pension age
- War Widow’s Pension
- Widowed Mother’s Allowance
- Widowed Parent’s Allowance
- Widow’s Pension
This list encompasses a broad range of state pensioners and benefit claimants, potentially impacting many individuals if the petition succeeds. The campaign underscores growing concerns about the adequacy of support for older adults amid rising living costs, urging policymakers to revisit outdated benefit structures.
