DVLA Warns Drivers of £1,000 Fine for Not Updating Address
DVLA Warns Drivers of £1,000 Fine for Address Update

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a warning to motorists that failing to update their address on their driving licence could result in a fine of up to £1,000. The reminder comes as many drivers may have moved home without notifying the agency.

Free Task, Costly Penalty

Updating an address on a full or provisional driving licence is free of charge. The DVLA states: "It does not cost anything to change your address with DVLA." However, drivers who neglect this simple task face a maximum fine of £1,000. The agency cautions on its website: "You can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA when your address changes."

Motorists can continue driving while waiting for their new licence to arrive. The DVLA confirms: "You can still drive while you're waiting for your new licence."

Additional Steps When Moving

When updating their address, drivers must also update the address on their vehicle log book (V5C), change their vehicle tax Direct Debit if applicable, and update the address on any personalised registration number document (V750 or V778).

Once the online application is submitted, the new driving licence typically arrives within one week. The DVLA advises notifying the agency as soon as possible after moving to ensure they can contact drivers regarding licence applications, medical enquiries, penalty notices, or renewal reminders.
