DWP Updates PIP and DLA Rules: Motability Scheme Changes from July 1
DWP PIP DLA Motability Changes July 1

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed a major change to the Motability Scheme, which will take effect from July 1. This update affects claimants of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA), as well as other disability benefits. The rules are being 'refreshed' to better reflect the needs of claimants, according to experts.

Key Changes to Tyre Replacements

Under the new terms and conditions, tyre replacements will remain covered by the scheme but only if they fall within 'fair use'. Claimants with a three-year lease will be entitled to replace up to six tyres, with four of these permitted for damage-related reasons. Those with a five-year lease can replace up to ten tyres, six of which can be for damage.

The Motability Scheme stated: 'We'll always focus on helping you stay mobile, and we'll make sure you understand any costs before you decide. We'll refresh our fair usage policy based on how tyres are being used today.'

Average Usage and Policy Rationale

On average, customers replace two tyres or fewer over a three-year lease. The new limits are designed to cover what most people need. The scheme added: 'We're also reducing the number of miles included in the lease. So it makes sense to update tyre replacement at the same time.'

These changes could also impact Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance, Adult Disability Payment (ADP), and Child Disability Payment (CDP).

Practical Advice for Claimants

For those needing new tyres, Motability advises: 'If your car has locking wheel nuts, you'll need to bring the locking wheel nut key you got with your car. This is usually in the boot.' Claimants with accessibility needs should phone ahead to check which local centres are most accessible, as some are in older buildings.

Motability operates its tyre replacement scheme in conjunction with Kwik Fit, which has branches in Birmingham and across the UK.
