Work on a former police headquarters in Birmingham has officially begun, with a completion date set for just over 18 months away. The ex-police HQ on Steelhouse Lane near Snow Hill is currently undergoing stripping works, with 59 apartments earmarked to be fully completed by September 2027.
Transformation of the Former HQ
This development is seen as the first step in the major apartment transformation for the former headquarters. A sales launch for the new apartments is planned at the end of this month, with property developers Bunnywell Homes set to name the new site Priors Gate.
The property was used as offices for West Midlands Police until 2017. Construction plans depict that the apartments will include 54 one-bedroom and five two-bedroom homes. Birmingham City Council approved the development back in January.
Preserving History
Joshua Steeples, co-founder of The Agents Club, told PlaceMidlands that the 1930s-era building will be carefully restored and refurbished for residential use. He said: "Opportunities to bring a building of this character and history back to life are incredibly rare, particularly in such a central Birmingham location. What Bunnywell Homes is delivering here is genuinely special, a scheme with architectural presence, real heritage, and a product that will appeal both to city centre residents, professionals, and to global investors seeking something unique in the Birmingham market."
Mallam Grant, co-founder of The Agents Club, added: "There is a real difference between a typical new-build apartment scheme and a project like Priors Gate. This is a building with history, scale and architectural depth, and that gives it a unique position in the market. We are delighted to be working alongside Bunnywell Homes on a launch of this quality and significance."
Apartments at the site are scheduled for completion in 2027.
