Government Funding Injection for Local Community Initiatives
Seven community projects across South Staffordshire are set to benefit from a significant funding boost totalling over £125,000 after receiving approval from district council leaders. The funding decision, made during the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, will support schemes designed to benefit residents of all ages throughout the district.
Memorial Garden and Youth Enterprise Among Beneficiaries
From the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), more than £51,000 has been allocated to three important local initiatives. Cheslyn Hay Parish Council will receive £24,220 to create a memorial garden at Chapel Square, opposite the village war memorial. The project aims to establish a peaceful space for reflection and community events, including Remembrance Sunday services and Christmas tree lighting ceremonies.
Young people across the district will benefit from over £22,000 allocated to Young Enterprise sessions in local schools. This programme focuses on developing essential life skills to help students transition successfully from education to employment.
The Alzheimer's Society has been awarded £4,667 to continue its vital support for local residents affected by dementia. This funding will enable the provision of community networks, support groups, and assistive technology for both residents and carers.
Rural England Prosperity Fund Supports Active Communities
Four additional projects will share more than £75,000 from the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF). The largest single award of £25,000 will fund an outdoor gym and accessible play equipment at Marston Field in Wheaton Aston. Following extensive community consultation, Lapley, Stretton and Wheaton Aston Parish Council has designed an inclusive space featuring exercise equipment, accessible play areas, and a professionally-designed bike pump track.
Essington Rugby Club receives over £23,000 to improve accessibility at its facilities. The planned enhancements include designated disabled parking spaces, installation of access ramps, and creation of a fully accessible toilet facility.
In environmental improvements, Swindon Parish Council has been granted £5,500 towards installing solar panels at Swindon Community Centre, aiming to reduce both energy costs and carbon emissions.
A further £25,000 grant will enable Cheslyn Hay Parish Council to enhance the entrance to the village recreation ground. The project involves improving drainage, resurfacing the area, and creating better access for wheelchair users, parents with pushchairs, and mobility scooter users, along with providing parking facilities for visitors.
The council had been allocated a £1.25 million share of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and £146,792 from the Rural England Prosperity Fund for distribution throughout the district during the 2025/26 financial year.
