The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an urgent warning to hundreds of thousands of benefit claimants across the UK: watch your post for a crucial letter about moving to Universal Credit.
What is Happening with Legacy Benefits?
The Government is completing its long-term plan to replace older, legacy benefits with the Universal Credit system. This process, known as managed migration, means that payments for several legacy benefits will eventually stop completely.
If you currently receive any of the following, you will be affected: Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Income Support, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA).
The Vital Letter You Must Not Ignore
You will know it is your turn to move when you receive an official Managed Migration Notice from the DWP. This letter is not something you can afford to file away. It will contain a deadline by which you must apply for Universal Credit.
Social security minister, Sir Stephen Timms, emphasised the urgency: “If you get that letter asking you to move to Universal Credit, don’t ignore it. It’s crucial to respond, so you can keep getting the support you’re entitled to.”
If you are concerned about meeting the deadline, you can call the Universal Credit Migration Notice Helpline on 0800 169 0328 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm) to discuss the possibility of an extension.
Extra Support for Vulnerable Claimants
The DWP has confirmed it is providing enhanced support for vulnerable claimants during this transition, particularly those on ESA. The department reports that more than 95% of ESA recipients have now been transferred, with around 40% receiving additional help.
This specialist support can include dedicated phone calls, home visits, and one-to-one assistance from a caseworker to ensure a smooth changeover.
Sir Stephen Timms added: “Over 220,000 vulnerable people have now got the specialist support they need to move to Universal Credit – proof that we’re delivering a social security system that has respect at its heart.”
He also highlighted the range of help available, including the helpline, online guidance, and support from Citizens Advice.
The final phase-out for Income Support and income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance is set for April 2026. The key message from the DWP is to act promptly upon receiving your letter to prevent any interruption to your essential payments.
