Mum-of-Eight on Benefits Enters Birmingham Council Race with Community Pledge
Marie Buchan, a 43-year-old mother of eight who has been dubbed the 'Benefits Queen' due to receiving substantial government support over the years, has announced her candidacy for the Birmingham City Council elections on May 7, 2026. She is running as an independent candidate in the Weoley and Selly Oak ward, aiming to bring her personal experiences to local politics.
From Media Scrutiny to Political Ambition
Marie Buchan's life has been heavily covered by tabloids, particularly after it was revealed she received around £500,000 in benefits and made controversial purchases like cosmetic surgery in Turkey and a horse. She has expressed regret for these actions, stating they were mistakes and that she now focuses on her community. Despite facing online trolling and hate messages, she is committed to door-knocking during her campaign.
"I know how difficult it is for people in my area, I'm one of them and I want to make a difference," Marie said, highlighting her motivation to address issues like dumped rubbish and local hardships. She emphasized that none of her eight children have been in trouble, which she believes reflects her character positively.
Part of a Broader Independent Movement
Marie is one of six independent candidates running under Bishop Desmond Jaddoo's #CleanBirmingham campaign, which emerged from the city's bin strikes. This group aims to bring change to local politics by fielding candidates without traditional political backgrounds. Bishop Jaddoo, who is standing in Kingstanding, described Marie as "part of a family" and praised the candidates for being normal people living in their wards.
"They are normal people with no affiliation to political parties. They live in the wards and want to make a difference," Bishop Jaddoo explained. He added that the campaign's slogan, "Enough Is Enough," reflects a desire for strong, accountable representation to help Birmingham overcome recent challenges.
Addressing Local Concerns and Personal Growth
Marie has spoken openly about her fears for community safety, citing a stabbing incident she experienced and concerns about knife crime affecting her children. She advocates for initiatives like knife bins to surrender weapons. Reflecting on her journey, she said, "It's all part of a process, it's opened my eyes to a lot of things. I'm strong enough to stand in the elections because I'm not on my own."
Still on benefits, Marie gave birth to her first child at 19 and has seen her eldest leave home. She remains focused on improving her neighbourhood, viewing her past controversies as lessons that have strengthened her resolve.
