Lidl Revises Plans for New Wolverhampton Store on Penn Road Site
Lidl has launched new proposals to construct a supermarket on the site of the former Goldthorn Hotel along Wolverhampton's A449 Penn Road. The supermarket chain originally received planning approval for this location in 2023 but has faced significant delays in acquiring the land, prompting a revised design that necessitates a new planning application.
Updated Store Features and Community Impact
This latest proposal includes several enhanced features aimed at modernizing the retail offering. The plans feature a larger car park, electric vehicle charging points, an in-store bakery, solar panels, and the popular Middle of Lidl section. Permission to demolish the historic building, which dates back to 1890 and once hosted celebrities like Bob Monkhouse and Diana Dors, was granted in January 2023.
The new store is expected to create up to 40 new jobs, boosting local employment and adding to the area's retail diversity. However, the project has not been without controversy; in recent years, it sparked backlash from locals, with residents signing a petition containing 105 signatures against the development.
Public Consultation and Future Steps
Lidl has initiated a public consultation to gather feedback from the community as it prepares to submit the new planning application. Joe Caunt, regional head of property at Lidl GB, stated, "It’s no secret we have been keen to deliver a new Lidl store at this site off Penn Road for some time. We are pleased to present these new plans which would deliver our very latest store format including our full, great value product range and ever-popular in-store bakery. We encourage as many people as possible to engage with our consultation and provide feedback as we prepare our planning submission."
The delays in purchasing the land have led to this updated proposal, which aims to address both logistical challenges and community concerns while advancing the supermarket's expansion in the region.
