Walsall Dad Admits 'Stupid Decision' After Driving So Dangerously Police Called Off Chase
Walsall Dad Admits 'Stupid Decision' in Dangerous Chase

A young father from Walsall drove at three times the speed limit with 'no care for other road users' during a dangerous chase around Birmingham, a court heard. Idris Husmani, 21, took police on a wild chase through different areas of the city in a 'stupid decision' that 'put other road users at risk,' Birmingham Magistrates Court was told.

High-Speed Chase Through City Streets

Ms Begum, prosecuting, detailed how police were alerted to the dad-of-one driving at 'high speed' on the M6 Southbound in the early hours of March 29 this year. Officers attempted to intercept the vehicle multiple times, but Husmani hit speeds of up to 90mph within a 30mph zone while advancing through one area of the city.

During the chaos, Husmani failed to stop in Sutton Coldfield or Kingstanding, even after his VW Golf collided with the kerb. 'He failed to stop in Sutton Coldfield and Kingstanding. The defendant collided with the curb. Despite this, he continued to drive around on three wheels [after damaging his tyre],' Ms Begum said.

Reckless Driving and Abandoned Pursuit

The prosecutor added that the young man had 'driven through red lights' more than once without any 'regard for the safety of road users,' narrowly missing other drivers. 'He continued onto the Aston Expressway. Swerving lane closures, the defendant willingly entered the lane driving towards the road works,' she said. The prosecution told the court this was 'extremely dangerous' and forced police officers to 'abandon pursuit' of the vehicle.

Ultimately, Husmani was stopped by officers on the M6 Southbound and arrested for dangerous driving. Despite the offence, Ms Begum noted he was of 'good character' with no prior convictions.

Defence: A 'Stupid Decision' by a Family Man

Mr Khattak, defending, called the 21-year-old a 'family man' with a wife and child who made a 'stupid decision.' He said: 'He is a working man who earns £1,200 per month. He is a family man with one child, who is premature.' Mr Khattak added that Husmani had 'health issues of his own' and had an MRI two weeks ago regarding a cyst on the brain. He reiterated Husmani's remorse, telling the court the defendant himself called his actions a 'stupid decision.'

Sentence and Disqualification

Sentencing, Mrs Roberts JP, Mr Welsby JP and Mr Wheatley JP told the court that Husmani, of Earl Street, Walsall, had committed a 'very serious offence,' with his 'dangerous driving putting other road users at risk.' The 21-year-old was handed 12 months in custody, suspended for 18 months, in addition to 25 rehabilitation days and 100 hours of unpaid work. He was disqualified from driving for 18 months, with the possibility of retaking his driving test in an extended format. He was also ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a surcharge fee of £187.
